In February 2024, I embarked on an unforgettable road trip from Riyadh to AlUla, a journey that took me through some of the most breathtaking landscapes Saudi Arabia has to offer. Saudi Arabia is a vast country, and driving through it gives you a true sense of its grandeur. The endless stretches of desert, towering dunes, and rugged mountains create a surreal backdrop that feels almost otherworldly. But what made this trip truly special wasn’t just the scenery—it was the warmth and hospitality of the Saudi people, who went out of their way to help us, even when language barriers made communication a challenge

The Road to AlUla: A Desert Adventure

The drive from Riyadh to AlUla is an adventure in itself. As we left the bustling city behind, the landscape transformed into a sea of golden sand dunes, some of the largest I’ve ever seen. The sheer scale of the desert is humbling, and the ever-changing light created a photographer’s dream. We stopped countless times to capture the beauty of the dunes, the play of shadows, and the vast emptiness that stretched as far as the eye could see.

But the desert is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. At one point, our jeep got stuck in the soft sand, and no matter how hard we tried, we couldn’t free it. Just as we were starting to worry, a local man appeared out of nowhere, as if the desert itself had sent him to our aid. Without hesitation, he helped us dig out the jeep and even guided us to a safer path. His kindness didn’t stop there—he invited us to his village, where we were treated to traditional Saudi hospitality. Over cups of sweet Arabic coffee, he shared stories about life (there was one person who could speak a bit of Hindi, same as I do) in the desert and even guided us to a hidden spot perfect for capturing the sunset. This encounter was a reminder of the generosity and warmth of the Saudi people, even when words were scarce.

AlUla: A Timeless Wonder

AlUla is a place that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a history book. The ancient city, with its towering rock formations and archaeological sites, is a testament to the rich history of this region. Walking through the ruins of Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, was like stepping back in time. The intricately carved tombs and the silence of the desert created an almost mystical atmosphere.

But AlUla isn’t just about history—it’s also a haven for photographers. The golden hour here is nothing short of magical, with the sun casting long shadows over the sandstone cliffs and illuminating the desert in a warm, golden glow. My friends Banura and Sadesh, who joined me on this trip, were equally captivated by the beauty of the place. We spent hours exploring the area, capturing everything from the intricate details of the rock formations to the vast, sweeping landscapes.

Al Disah Valley: A Hidden Paradise

From AlUla, we made our way to Al Disah Valley, a place that feels like a hidden paradise in the middle of the desert. The valley is a stark contrast to the arid landscapes we had been driving through—lush green trees, crystal-clear water ponds, and towering rock formations create a scene that feels almost cinematic. As we drove through the valley, we were greeted by the sight of camels leisurely walking through the morning mist, their silhouettes framed by the dramatic cliffs.

It was like something out of a movie.

The valley is a photographer’s dream, with endless opportunities to capture its natural beauty. We spent hours exploring the area, climbing over rocks, and wading through the shallow ponds. The tranquility of the place was almost meditative, and it was easy to lose track of time as we immersed ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings.

Reflections on the Journey

This trip was more than just a photography adventure—it was a journey of discovery, both of the landscapes and the people of Saudi Arabia. The country’s vastness is awe-inspiring, and its beauty is matched only by the kindness of its people. Despite the language barriers, we were always met with smiles and offers of help, whether it was directions, a cup of coffee, or a hand to pull us out of the sand.

To my friends Banura and Sadesh, thank you for being part of this incredible journey. And to the kind stranger who helped us in the desert, your generosity will never be forgotten. Saudi Arabia is a country that surprises and delights at every turn, and I can’t wait to return and explore more of its hidden treasures.

If you’re planning a trip to Saudi Arabia, don’t miss AlUla and Al Disah Valley. These places are not just destinations—they’re experiences that will stay with you long after you’ve left. And remember, sometimes the best adventures are the ones where you get a little lost along the way.
